Not sure if this article's prediction will come true, but it is interesting to speculate - http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/8421491.stm

It may very well be true. The prices for netbooks are rising (for anything other than the basic models) and regular laptops are getting cheaper. I've always said that netbooks weren't meant to be main computers but now companies are making the mistake of positioning them as just that. The disappointment that comes from that when anybody tries to run full-blown applications on them will probably give a push-back on them too. My brother picked up a 17" Toshiba laptop with intel core 2 duo processor on Black Friday in the US for $400. Sure, it was a 1-off special but that's cheaper than many netbooks.

For me, the main draw of buying my Netbook was it's small size which makes it terrific for portability and it main use of just surfing the Internet , emailing and perhaps being able to use the Word processor program.
The smaller screen size was perfectly suitable to me and it doesn't put a big draw on the battery. Together with the Atom CPU, which does a perfectly good job of surfing the Internet, the power draw on the battery, allows these Netbooks to run a long time on their battery and not fry your lap, from the heat of the processor.
When I decide to replace my current Netbook, I will again be looking for around the same physical size unit and with modest specs, so that the battery life is still very good.

Yeah, I could see netbooks taking a smaller share of the Market, but getting squeezed out? I don't think so. I still see far too many people getting excited about them to believe that. The vast majority of Computer users that I know only use their Computers for Internet-based stuff. And the way that one commentator was talking you'd think that netbooks only had a Pentium II processor, not a 1.6Ghz one. They can easily play movies and handle audio. Hell, I hook up an external drive and rip DVDs on mine -- it justs takes longer that's all.
The biggest enemy to Netbooks that I can see is Windows 7 which runs like Molasses (While delivering no discernible advantages) on 1 GB of RAM where XP would Scream.

Can you play HD movies on your netbook? Good Question. Would that just be a Question of downloading a file that is labelled as being HD? Paul

That limitation, if there is one, might influence some people, but not me. I don't like watching movies on a computer to begin with. If I had a HD movie, I'd want a large TV. Some watch video on hand held devices though.
We'll know the future of the netbook in 5 years or so I guess. I agree with Paul that they'll be around, but maybe have a smaller market share. I'll also guess they'll be lighter, more powerful, and cheaper.
