There is a free copy of a newsstand Ubuntu magazine from last spring that is really good. It's big and glossy with many interesting  articles. Anyone who uses Ubuntu or might use it should get it. It makes me want to install Ubuntu again.

Great looking professional magazine. Those Brits sure know how to make attractive looking computer magazines. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, buster!  I'll look it over ASAP - though X/K/Ubuntu's becoming my favourite distro to love to hate!

If you don't like Ubuntu, Bob, then you'll like one of Caitlin Martin's recent blogs:
Ubuntu Is A Poor Standard Bearer For Linux.  She isn't super critical of Ubuntu/Canonical per se, but only as a Linux "poster child".  (Me, I like Ubuntu, but Caitlyn's blogs are always a good read.)

After the article, I did note some of those critical of Ubuntu did mention Mepis, which gave up Ubuntu, by the way, as a source of programs and went to Debian.

Odd she did not mention Debian, which is probable the key distribution in the Linux firmament.

Very good article, Fox. I think she probably didn't mention Debian just because it's not something you really have to push. People who love Debian already know about it. Those who don't love it, still know about it. But it's still not one of the easiest distributions to start with and I actually doubt it's as stable as RHEL or CentOS which is what all the Linux hosts seem to use. CentOS is basically RHEL without the trademarks or other references to Red Hat. And it's free, unlike RHEL which is expensive.

I mentioned Debian because so many distros are downstream from it, including Ubuntu. Most distros don't do the grunt work for themselves but depend on others, and then adapt the work.

So Mepis, Ubuntu, DSL, Knoppix, and so on are derived from Debian, and of course anything derived from Ubuntu is ultimately from Debian, like Mint or Kubuntu.

Take away Mandriva, Red Hat (Fedora), Debian, Suse, Gentoo and Slackware, and most distros will disappear, because they are built on one of these six.
